Last night I watched an ancient movie (1996) called “The Bird Cage”. Robin Williams played a very manly gay man, married to a very emotional Nathan Lane with a flaming houseman, Hank Azaria. The humor was a satisfying combination of slapstick and word play, performed by consummate veteran actors. I was refreshed.
The idea that these men are devoted, loving life partners did not require any graphic sex or tongue kissing. I miss those days. We used to be aware of sexual situations by inference rather than graphic demonstrations.
I’m not homophobic. I’m graphicsexophobic. I don’t like watching intimate details acted out by any characters. Nowadays it is impossible to watch any moving picture offerings without sexifying the characters. Wimmin on top. Men from behind. Spread eagles and open mouths slobbering and licking. Yuck. Cooties! I turn into a 10 year-old.
Why?
My generation wanted to sexual freedom and honesty. Be careful what you wish for.
